- Description: For the last 20 years, “Granny’s Kitchen†which ultimately became The Community Soup Kitchen has been dedicated to providing for the needs of homeless and less fortunate individuals. Toward those goals, volunteers feed the homeless and provide on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Through a partnership with Faith Homeless ministry, meals also are served on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. More than 500 clients are fed monthly at the soup kitchen. Food and clothing are also distributed once a month (or more frequently on an emergency basis) to families in low income areas. In addition to their feeding program, The Community Soup Kitchen donates clothing and other staples to clients who come to the Soup Kitchen as well as to area nursing homes and families whose homes have been destroyed by fire. During the Katrina hurricane crisis in 2006, The Community Soup Kitchen operated 6 days a week providing disaster relief and meals to evacuees housed in local shelters and motels.
