Details: The Food Bank of Central Louisiana was incorporated in October 1989 with the mission of alleviating hunger in Central Louisiana. In May of 1990, the Food Bank officially opened and distributed 2,329 pounds of food to two pantries. Seven months later, these numbers jumped to 193,845 pounds to 31 pantries. The Food Bank became a member of Feeding America, formally known as America’s Second Harvest in 1995. The Food Bank has grown over the past 20 years, adding member agencies and programs. In 2009, the Food Bank distributed more than 5.7 million pounds of food to 85 member agencies in Central Louisiana. As the Food Bank of Central Louisiana works, with your help, toward the future, we maintain the faith, and the hope, that one day our work will be unnecessary. That one day, together, we will create a community where no one has to go hungry.

Details: Hot, balanced, nutritious meals are served every day to anyone who walks in the door – no questions asked. There are no forms to fill out, no need for an ID, or even to sign in – just pick up a plate and go through the line. Feeding several hundred people daily, 365 days a year requires an army of dedicated volunteers to collect the food, prepare and cook the food, and wash dishes and clean up. It takes 10-15 volunteers every day (including weekends and holidays), 3-6 hours to transform donated food items into hot, delicious meals for the poor and hungry in our community. The Shepherd Center

Details: The Shepherd Center is a non-profit, ecumenical ministry that has served Rapides Parish since 1983. We are a ministry of last resort, offering full service emergency assistance, as available financial resources permit, with security and utility deposits, rent and utility payments, clothing vouchers, food, advocacy and other critical needs to those experiencing a financial crisis. The Shepherd Center is supported by the generosity of churches, synagogues, businesses, families and individuals in Rapides Parish. The Shepherd Center hosts several fundraising events, including the Holiday High Tea (a Cenla Christmas tradition), the Italian Feast, a Wine Auction and other event. Watch this website for more information on these and other exciting programs throughout the year. The center also administers grants that address homelessness in Rapides Parish for veterans and non-veterans. Case managers at The Shepherd Center evaluate individuals and their circumstance to determine eligibility for these programs.

Details: CLASS was organized as a small grass roots volunteer organization dedicated to meeting the needs of people living with HIV in Alexandria, and has evolved over the past 25 years to a 501 (c) (3) community based organization (CBO) serving the 8 parishes of the Louisiana Office of Public Health's Region 6 area. CLASS operates a Food Pantry in which nutritious food and dietary supplements are available. Hours of operation: Monday and Tuesday 8:30am to 4pm, Friday 8:30am to 3:30pm. The Food Pantry is supported through grants, church offerings, and donations from people in the community.
