  • Description: Sarah’s Kitchen: Named after Abraham’s wife Sarah: Genesis 17: 15-16. Our Mission is to welcome and feed those in our community who are struggling financially and need a hot nutritious meal. The idea for Sarah’s Kitchen began January 2009 during the latest recession. A group of spiritually motivated layman and clergy from seven congregations started planning a way to feed the hungry in St Lucie County where the unemployment rate was then over 15%. The five existing sites serve over 1000 hot meals a week to individuals and families who live below the poverty line: mentally challenged, physically handicapped, the working poor, seniors who are surviving on social security, mothers with infants, and the homeless. We serve many who have been affected by the current economic crisis: people who have lost their jobs, and those who have lost their homes. 100% of all donations are used to feed those in need. Everyone working for Sarah’s Kitchen is a volunteer. We do not have a paid administrative staff. Twenty-nine congregations have representatives on the Sarah’s Kitchen Advisory Board. These congregations supply over 750 volunteers that comprise 25 teams of workers: Team leaders, cooks, set-up crews, servers and clean-up crews. These volunteers served over 53,000 meals in 2013. We are an interfaith organization that has its foundation in the Spiritual understanding that our Faith calls us to serve others, especially those in need. We believe that everyone can make a difference in the lives of others because everyone can serve. Sarah’s Kitchen at First Congregational Church: Every Wednesday From 5 PM to 6:30 PM.
