Details: The food pantry was established in the early 1990's when officials of the United Methodist Church in Corinna feared for the future of the Eastland Woolen Mill and its many employees. The clothing industry was having a difficult time and the market in Maine was "drying up." By 1991, many workers at Eastland were furloughed, hoping that this would lead to better things. Things did not improve, and by early 1993, the Eastland Woolen Mill closed, putting more than 300 employees out of work. The food pantry had already been established and operating for well over a year, and was ready to help those families that were suddenly needing to survive without a weekly paycheck. Today, the Corinna Food Pantry is still operating and reaching out to help the more than 150 families living at or below the poverty level. The pantry gets its financial support from FEMA as well as other organizations and individuals, and is able to receive or buy at low cost grocery items from Penquis CAP, the Good Shepherd Food Bank, and local bakeries. The pantry itself is run entirely by volunteer workers who both service people at the pantry or deliver to the homes of those unable to get out. The Corinna Food Pantry of the United Methodist Church at its inception was established as an outreach program dedicated to serving the needy families of the area, and it remains just as dedicated today, more than 15 years later.
