  • Description: Founded in 1969, the Evansville Emergency Food Pantry Consortium’s mission is to feed hungry people. It is a collaborative effort by six Evansville area food pantries: Central United Methodist Church, Patchwork Central, Simpson United Methodist Church (West Side Food Pantry), St. Matthews United Church of Christ, St. Vincent de Paul, Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Every weekday, there are multiple Consortium pantries open across the city of Evansville. Last year the Consortium provided food to over 45,000 people in Evansville. Each of these individuals received a nutritionally balanced food order that included enough food for them to fix about 12 meals. This means that the Consortium distributed over 540,000 meal equivalents in 2013. Each meal only cost the Consortium an average of 36 cents to provide. Over the past few years, our pantries have seen a steady growth in the number of needy families seeking food assistance. United Way of Southwestern Indiana’s 211 call center has found that food is the number one need of people calling for help. Reducing the prevalence of hunger can cause a ripple of positive changes throughout the community. Families are eligible to receive food from one of the Consortium pantries once every thirty days. Before receiving food, the family must obtain a food voucher from a referring agency. These referral agencies include: Outreach Ministries; Township Trustees (Center, Knight, Perry, & Pigeon); Division of Family Resources (DFR); St. Vincent de Paul food pantry; SWIRCA. Food Pantry at Central United Methodist Church: Mon & Thurs, 9:30-11:30 pm
