The food we serve is provided by local businesses, organizations and individuals: Harris Teeter, Publix, Pet Milk, Polka Dot Cupcakes, Daphne’s Bakery, Food Lion, and Trader Joe’s, to name a few. We have volunteers from the Dilworth neighborhood and beyond, including our church family, schools, and businesses. Some have been with us since the beginning and others help out as time permits. Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte - Food Pantry (Charlotte)
Charlotte, NC 28203
704.370.3232
Details: Catholic Charities has three food pantries across the Diocese of Charlotte, in Asheville, Charlotte and Winston-Salem. Each food pantry provides walk-in assistance on a first-come, first-served basis during normal operating hours. The pantries operate on a client-choice model, through the principle of providing food with dignity. Clients select food they would like from a list of items in stock. Every pantry relies heavily on the work of volunteers to stock and distribute groceries on a weekly basis. First time clients complete a one-page application with basic demographic and household member information. Due to the overwhelming needs, we can only serve clients once a month. Charlotte: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 - 10 a.m.
Loaves & Fishes Pantry @ Camino del Rey Ministry
Charlotte, NC 28262

Details: Loaves & Fishes provides a week’s worth of nutritionally balanced groceries to individuals and families in a short-term crisis through a network of 20 emergency food pantries located throughout Mecklenburg County. Loaves & Fishes uses a Client Choice model which allows clients to select groceries their family is most likely to eat. Clients are able to choose a specified number of items in the areas of grains, proteins, vegetables, fruit, and dairy based on the size of the family. The number of choices is determined by a Registered Dietician to ensure that enough food is available to create three meals a day for a week. It is important to the dignity of our clients to feel they have some control and requires them to invest some time in the process. It also allows for greater interaction between clients and volunteers. In a short-term crisis, a week’s worth of groceries from Loaves & Fishes can help mean the difference between paying the rent, utilities, for medicine or feeding your family. To visit a Loaves & Fishes’ pantry you must have a referral. A referral can come from a church pastor, clergy member, medical provider, school counselor, or many of the human service agencies located in Mecklenburg County. The referring agency must call Loaves & Fishes on your behalf to make the referral. Loaves & Fishes provides assistance with groceries to be prepared in your home. The Soup Kitchen first opened in 1979 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and moved in 1994 to the Urban Ministry Center, where it has been in continuous operation ever since. Today, it remains the largest, oldest Charlotte soup kitchen and the only one that serves a hot, nutritious lunch 365 days a year, with no questions asked. We welcome anyone who is in need of a meal, regardless of the person’s circumstance. In our 30-plus year history, we have always fulfilled our basic promise to feed hungry people despite ice storms, heat waves, power outages and increasing demand. The Soup Kitchen operates with a different volunteer crew each day (300 volunteers each month), under the direction of a full-time manager and part-time assistant. In 2013 we served 99,230 lunches and over 1.5 million since our center’s inception. The Soup Kitchen meets a critical, basic need not only by reliably meeting the growing demand for food but also by offering a welcoming front door for people living on the streets. The kitchen serves as the entry point to the continuum of services available through the Urban Ministry Center and the Homeless Services Network. We’re the first place homeless neighbors turn to for food and basic services, which in turn creates the opportunity for helping address the core issues that impact their lives.
